Information on Influenza
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the seasonal flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. The 2010 and 2011 flu vaccine will protect against the 2009 H1N1, and two other influenza viruses (an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus).
It is recommended that everyone 6 months and older should receive the flu vaccination. However, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the following groups should be vaccinated because they are high risk:
- Pregnant women
- Children younger than 5 years of age but especially younger than 2 years of age.
- People 50 years of age and older.
- People with certain chronic diseases.
- Residents of nursing homes or other long-term facilities.
- People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu. (health care workers, etc)
The age and health of the person receiving the flu vaccine is relevant to the effectiveness of the vaccine. However, the only way to protect you and your family from influenza is to be vaccinated each year.
